Like maps. And globes. A world map is a homeschool essential, and when we study a particular era in history we should have specific maps, too. For example, if studying explorers, a map of exploration routes would be super helpful. If studying Ancient Egypt, a map of Ancient Egypt and surrounding area is also super helpful. Have it visible and accessible while you read. All the time. Refer to it. Talk about the place. Talk about the place your studying in relationship to other places.
Like your place. Which brings me to my next point, that one should always have a map of one's own area, for example, if you are living in Canada, you should have a map of Canada accessible all the time, because it's just goofy not to.
Timelines are important too, they tie history together. We have a few timelines on any given day, all over the house. A mega giant timeline of world history, a pithy little nutshell timeline of the major eras in history, and usually a "study specific" timeline for the era we are studying...the above examples work to illustrate the importance of timelines, too. A timeline of exploration...or a timeline or Ancient Egypt.
